Ukraine’s Fight for Survival: Latest Updates from the War Front

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, it is essential to have reliable sources of information. On March 2, Ukraine’s military reported that they had successfully repelled 85 Russian attacks in the eastern part of the country. These battles took place at Kupiansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Shakhtarsk, and were a violation of international humanitarian laws, as Russia launched 31 air strikes and three missile attacks targeting civilian infrastructure in the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. .

The Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff has reported that local populations in occupied territories are under persistent pressure from the Russian occupation administration to give up their land. As of March 1, around 200 individuals have been forcibly taken from a village in the Kherson region and transported to an unknown location under the guise of “screening operations.” (Soldak, 2023)

On March 3, Ukraine was able to repatriate the bodies of 17 fallen soldiers in strict adherence to the rules of the Geneva Convention, a significant milestone in the ongoing conflict. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the number of soldiers killed in action who have been repatriated has surpassed 1,426. (Soldak, 2023)

Despite ongoing hostilities, the international community continues to show its support for Ukraine. European officials have announced that Ukraine will receive crucial artillery ammunition from member states in the coming weeks, with all EU states except Denmark joining the project to donate shells from their stockpiles. The cost of the ammunition will be covered by an existing EU fund, with an expected total allocation of 1 billion euros ($1.06 billion). (Soldak, 2023)

Furthermore, Ukrainian students displaced by the Russian invasion have received support from a New York City-based scholarship organization, the Tamizdar project. The organization has launched a fundraising campaign to support undergraduate students who have been forced to leave Ukraine and seek to continue their education in exile. Prominent writers and academics, including the director of Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute Serhii Plokhy and Nobel Prize Laureate Svetlana Alexievich, are involved in the campaign.

Two online charity book auctions and a donation campaign are open to the public through March 31, and proceeds will fund scholarships covering tuition and room and board for qualified recipients. (Dzysiuk & Tahiliani, 2023)

In conclusion, as the war between Russia and Ukraine rages on, the situation remains dire, with persistent attacks and pressures on the civilian population. However, the international community’s support and assistance to Ukraine have continued, with crucial ammunition donations and initiatives like the Tamizdar project. The ongoing conflict between these two countries is a sobering reminder of the importance of global cooperation and peaceful conflict resolution.
